Running for Oregon Community College Students (ROCCS!)
During the summer of 2025, CCC President Tim Cook completed an extraordinary 1,400-mile run across Oregon to raise awareness and funds for community college students facing basic needs challenges. The run began on June 16 at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario and concluded on August 6 at Columbia Gorge Community College in Hood River. Over 52 days, President Cook ran the equivalent of 53 marathons, averaging more than a marathon each day. The journey highlighted the real-world struggles students face in areas such as housing, food insecurity, child care, and transportation, while uniting all 17 community colleges in Oregon to support their students.
The Running for Oregon Community College Students (ROCCS) campaign reached every community college in the state and raised funds to be allocated directly to each college to support students’ essential needs. Approximately 200,000 community college students in Oregon make up more than half of the state’s higher education population, and this campaign emphasized the importance of providing them with the resources they need to succeed.
Support from local businesses and generous donors made the run possible. Johnson RV of Sandy donated a Sprinter van, and Carson Oil covered diesel costs for more than 5,000 miles across the state. Many additional donors, both local and from across the country, contributed to make the campaign a success and ensure students have the resources they need to thrive. The campaign also drew attention from legislators, including recognition from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden on the Senate Floor, participation by HECC’s executive director, and visits from state lawmakers at college events. Overall, the campaign raised $177,575, with each community college receiving the funds designated to support their students.
Nearly $90,000 of those funds were dedicated to students at Clackamas Community College, and the funds were invested through the Basic Needs Endowment at CCC Foundation so that students may be supported by this effort in perpetuity.
